Family Tragedy: Madrid Woman Suspected of Killing Father-in-Law
A fatal domestic violence incident recently took place in the San Pascual neighborhood of Madrid’s Ciudad Lineal district. A 27-year-old woman has been arrested by the National Police on suspicion of killing her 84-year-old father-in-law. Initial reports indicate the victim died from asphyxiation.
Suspect’s Account: Conflict Began with a Knife Attack
According to the statement from the arrested woman, María del Pilar, the incident occurred in the afternoon. She had accompanied her father-in-law home from the hospital that day and was preparing food for her boyfriend in the kitchen around 2:30 PM after lunch. She claims that her father-in-law suddenly began to verbally abuse her and approached her while holding a knife.
To evade the attack, a violent physical struggle ensued in the living room. The woman stated she was cut by the knife while using her arm to block it. During the fight, she allegedly pinned her father-in-law down on the sofa and applied a chokehold with her arm until he stopped resisting. She insists her actions were purely in self-defense.
Key Detail: Boyfriend Was Unaware During Balcony Meeting
A crucial aspect of the case is that throughout the entire conflict, the suspect’s boyfriend (the victim’s son) was on the apartment’s balcony, wearing headphones and participating in a remote work meeting. He told police that due to the balcony’s soundproofing and his focus on the meeting, he was completely unaware of the fatal struggle happening inside the living room.
It was not until after his meeting ended that he received a WhatsApp message from his girlfriend, María, informing him of the tragedy. The couple then jointly called Spain’s 112 emergency number to report the incident.
Police Intervention and Ongoing Investigation
When emergency responders arrived, they confirmed the 84-year-old man had no vital signs and was pronounced dead at the scene, with the preliminary cause of death determined as asphyxiation. Paramedics also treated the suspect’s knife wound on her arm at the scene. The case has now been taken over by Group VI of the Homicide Unit of Madrid’s National Police Judicial Brigade for a full investigation. The 27-year-old woman has been lawfully detained, and the final determination of the case will depend on the forthcoming forensic report and the results of the police investigation.
