The Spanish National Police recently dismantled a highly organized transnational criminal group suspected of setting up secret laboratories in Spain for the large-scale production and distribution of cocaine. This operation, a decisive blow following a long-term investigation, has uncovered a complex drug trafficking route from South America to Europe.
Joint International Operation Nets 27 Suspects
According to the Spanish National Police, the operation was the result of international cooperation. Police arrested 23 suspects within Spain and, in coordination with Australian authorities, another 4 were apprehended in Australia. Raids in Spain spanned several provinces, including Madrid, Toledo, Alicante, and Badajoz, leading to the seizure of 163 kilograms of finished cocaine, nearly €98,000 in cash, firearms and ammunition, as well as vehicles and mobile phones used in their criminal activities. Furthermore, law enforcement froze assets, including vehicles and real estate, valued at approximately €373,000.
Complex Logistics and a Two-Tier Production System
The investigation revealed that the criminal network had established a highly sophisticated drug smuggling and production chain. They would first conceal cocaine base hidden within legal goods such as timber, fruit, scrap metal, and even cement, shipping it from South America to European ports like those in Belgium via sea containers. Once in Europe, specially-equipped vehicles with sophisticated hidden compartments were used to transport the drugs into Spain. The organization operated a two-tier processing system: the first-tier labs, located in remote rural areas, were used for the initial extraction of cocaine from the cargo; the second-tier labs, set up in private urban residences, were for refining the drug and mixing it with cutting agents to increase its weight. The final product was then moved to warehouses near distribution markets for storage.
The Core of the Organization and its Colombian Cartel Connections
The trafficking organization was highly professional, with a strict internal structure and clear division of labor. Its core leader was not only the group’s manager but also a ‘chemist’ skilled in cocaine extraction and processing techniques. Police noted that this leader maintained direct and frequent contact with major Colombian drug cartels, particularly networks in the Cali region. To ensure a smooth supply chain, the organization had also established key logistical and transport hubs in places like Panama and Belgium.
Long-Term Investigation and Judicial Progress
The Spanish National Police’s investigation into the group began in February 2023, culminating in the recent operation after more than a year of intelligence gathering and surveillance. Judicial proceedings have now commenced, and three key suspects identified as leaders of the organization have been remanded in custody by the court. Due to the complexity and transnational nature of the case, the investigation is ongoing, and police have not ruled out further arrests.
