Midnight Climax: The ‘Palmera de la Virgen’ Illuminates the Heavens
The celebration’s apex occurs just before midnight. At this moment, all city lights in Elche are extinguished, setting the stage for the most spectacular scene. The ‘Palmera de la Virgen’ (Palm of the Virgin), a massive firework created from 1,080 rockets, bursts in the night sky, creating a pearly white canopy of light 300 meters wide that briefly turns night into day. Simultaneously, a 3-meter-high silhouette of the Virgin, outlined in fire, illuminates the tower of the local landmark, the Basílica de Santa María, creating a solemn and breathtaking spectacle.
Daredevils’ Revelry: The ‘Carretillà’ Continues the Tradition
After the midnight firework climax, the celebration transitions into a more interactive and thrilling stage. Within the Hort de Monjo, nearly 200 daredevils dressed in protective gear enact the historic ‘Carretillà,’ a chaotic firecracker war. They engage in an intense chase with handheld fireworks in a designated zone, continuing a century-old tradition of fire and elevating the city’s fervent atmosphere to new heights.
