Incident Overview and Emergency Response
On the afternoon of August 14, local time, a serious chemical leak occurred at the municipal sports center in Viana, a city in the Navarre region of Spain. The SOS Navarra 112 emergency coordination center received an alert at 5:41 PM, reporting that multiple people were showing symptoms of poisoning from chlorine inhalation.
Following the alert, a comprehensive emergency response was quickly activated. Firefighters, a medical ambulance, four basic life support ambulances, and a specialized medical team were immediately dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the Navarre Regional Police (Policía Foral) and the Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) arrived to assist with the rescue and maintain order.
Victim Status and Treatment
The chlorine poisoning incident affected a total of 11 people, most of whom were minors. Based on on-site assessments, six individuals were transported to the hospital for further treatment.
Among those hospitalized, two children, aged 5 and 9, are in the most serious condition, described by the Civil Guard as “seriously injured,” with their prognosis pending. Additionally, a child and an adult with minor symptoms were also taken to a local hospital for treatment. The remaining five individuals with mild symptoms were medically evaluated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Preliminary Accident Investigation
According to the initial on-site investigation, the direct cause of the incident was the formation of a high-concentration cloud of chlorine gas inside the sports center. Information released by the Civil Guard indicates that the chlorine aerosol was primarily concentrated in the facility’s jacuzzi area.
Authorities have now launched a full investigation into the incident to determine the exact technical failure or human error that led to the abnormal accumulation and release of chlorine. The affected areas of the sports center have been cordoned off pending further safety assessments and analysis of the accident’s cause.
