5.0 Magnitude Shallow Earthquake Shakes Granada
According to official data from Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), the earthquake occurred at 1:04 AM local time on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The epicenter was located in the municipality of Alhendín, in the province of Granada. The tremor registered a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale with a very shallow focal depth of just 2 kilometers, classifying it as a potentially destructive shallow earthquake. Tremors were felt throughout the entire region of Andalusia, with the exception of the provinces of Huelva and Cádiz. The shaking was particularly intense across the province of Granada, the province of Almería, the coastal areas of Málaga, and parts of Jaén and Córdoba.
Property Damage and Emergency Calls
The strong quake caused property damage in various parts of the Granada metropolitan area, primarily involving the detachment of facade elements and ornaments, falling roof tiles, and cracks in walls. Significant building damage has been recorded in towns such as Armilla. Following the earthquake, the Andalusia 112 emergency service center received over 80 calls related to the event, reflecting public alarm and concern. To date, officials have not received any reports of injuries or casualties.
Officials Activate Level 1 Emergency Response
Given the earthquake’s intensity and the surge in emergency calls, the Andalusian regional government’s official for Health and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, announced the formal activation of the Level 1 phase of the Seismic Risk Emergency Plan. This response level aims to coordinate resources, assess the impact of the disaster, and provide necessary assistance and guidance to the public. The regional government also issued a statement urging residents to remain calm, avoid frequently entering and exiting buildings until their structural safety can be verified, and stay away from areas with a risk of falling objects, such as building facades, balconies, and cornices, to prevent secondary accidents.
Aftershock Activity and Safety Warnings
Approximately 6 minutes after the mainshock, a 2.6 magnitude aftershock with a focal depth of just 1 kilometer occurred in the neighboring municipality of Gójar. Furthermore, data shows that three smaller micro-tremors were recorded in the same area the day before the main event (Friday). The continuous seismic activity has put local residents on high alert. Authorities are advising the public to be cautious of potential aftershocks and to stay updated with the latest safety information released by official channels.
