Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Alert: Two Provinces Under Orange Warning
Spain’s National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather alerts for nine autonomous communities this Sunday. The provinces of Teruel (Aragon) and Castellón (Valencian Community) are under an orange alert (significant risk) for heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Additionally, several other regions have received lower-level rain and thunderstorm warnings, specifically:
- Andalusia: Granada, Jaén
- Castilla y León: Burgos, León, Palencia, Soria
- Catalonia: Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Tarragona
- La Rioja: Iberian Mountain Range
High Temperatures Persist: Many Areas to Exceed 35°C
High temperatures persist alongside the severe weather. Weather authorities have issued heat warnings for numerous provinces, including Almería, Córdoba, Jaén, and Seville (Andalusia); Mallorca (Balearic Islands); Salamanca (Castilla y León); Lleida and Tarragona (Catalonia); Badajoz and Cáceres (Extremadura); and Ourense and Pontevedra (Galicia).
Maximum temperatures are expected to rise across most of the country, locally exceeding 35°C in the southwest, the Balearic Islands, northeastern lowlands, and along the Mediterranean coast. Meanwhile, large areas in the southwest, along the Mediterranean coast, and parts of the northeast will experience ‘tropical nights,’ with minimum temperatures remaining above 20°C.
National Weather Outlook Under the Influence of DANA
The primary cause of this weather instability is a high-level isolated depression (DANA) located over the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The forecast shows very overcast skies with light rain in the north of the peninsula. During the day, storm clouds will build up over large parts of the interior, initially bringing rain to mountain areas, which could later spread to nearby lowlands.
Weather authorities specifically note that thunderstorms may be accompanied by very strong wind gusts and even hail. In the Pyrenees, the Baetic System, and the lower Ebro River area, their intensity could be ‘very strong.’ Furthermore, morning fog is possible in northern regions and the Strait of Gibraltar.
