The Incident: A Deadly Attack on a Late-Night Street
Around 10 PM on Sunday, August 16, 2026, a deadly shooting occurred in the El Rocío neighborhood of Isla Cristina, Huelva. According to witnesses, two masked men arrived on a motorcycle. One of them, armed with a long-barreled gun, opened fire on a group of people on the street without warning. The investigators’ main theory is that the shooting was a premeditated act of revenge, stemming from a 2024 shooting in the El Torrejón neighborhood of Huelva’s capital. A man nicknamed ‘El Baba’ was named the main suspect in that case. The two adult female victims in this recent incident were ’El Baba’s’ mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and the seriously injured 18-year-old is his nephew. All signs indicate that the attack specifically targeted ’El Baba’s’ family.
Background: A Years-Long Violent Conflict
This was not an isolated incident but the latest escalation in a years-long local family conflict. The feud began with the 2024 shooting in the El Torrejón neighborhood, which left one person dead and another injured. The suspect, ‘El Baba,’ fled after the crime but was arrested weeks later in Gijón. Since then, retaliatory and intimidating shootings between the two families have occurred intermittently. The conflict gradually spread from the capital of Huelva to Isla Cristina, where relatives of some of those involved had sought refuge.
To curb the violence, the Guardia Civil conducted an operation in the area in May 2025, arresting three suspects and seizing firearms, ammunition, and over €58,000 in cash. However, two of the adult suspects were later provisionally released by the court. Just one month later, in June 2025, another shooting related to the family feud occurred in Isla Cristina, resulting in one death and one injury.
