Back-to-School Costs Continue to Climb
According to an analysis by price comparison platform Idealo, the average amount Spanish families spend on back-to-school supplies is increasing annually. Data shows the current average cost to equip a student for the new school year is approximately €505. This figure is about €80 higher than in 2022 and represents a slight increase of around 1% compared to the same period last year. Looking at a longer timeframe, the cumulative increase in this expenditure over the past four years has reached 19%, reflecting sustained pressure on education-related spending.
Prices Fluctuate Across Different Supplies
Specifically, price changes for different school supplies show varied trends. Backpacks are one of the items with the most significant price hikes, increasing by 11.25% year-over-year. The average spending on stationery has also reached €50.80, a 5.26% increase from last year. The price of physical textbooks saw a more moderate rise of about 1.6%.
Meanwhile, the prices of some items have dropped, offering some relief to household budgets. For example, the average price of sportswear has decreased from €26 to €21, a drop of about 19%, while the price of sneakers has also seen a reduction of approximately 9%.
Early Planning and Comparison Are Key to Saving
Faced with rising back-to-school bills, Idealo advises parents to adopt a proactive shopping strategy. The most crucial tip is to avoid last-minute bulk buying just before school starts. It is recommended that parents create a list of essentials for the new semester in advance, such as backpacks, calculators, and sneakers, and use price comparison tools to monitor prices across different retailers. This allows them to buy at the optimal time and avoid paying higher prices due to concentrated demand.
Stagger Purchases and Reuse Old Items
In addition to planning ahead, staggering purchases is an effective budget management technique. Parents can prioritize buying core items needed on the first day of school and postpone non-urgent supplies (like extra stationery or some supplementary reading materials) for a few weeks, waiting for potential sales or price drops. Furthermore, for families with multiple children, checking and reusing well-maintained supplies from the previous school year, or accepting second-hand items from friends and family, is a smart way to reduce unnecessary expenses and practice sustainable consumption. This approach not only saves money directly but also avoids the waste associated with buying brand-new gear every year.
