Record-High Defense Budget
According to the 2026 annual report by the international assessment agency Global Firepower (GFP), Spain’s defense spending in the past year reached a record €23.333 billion. This figure represents an increase of over 46.5% compared to the previous year, marking the most significant growth in recent years. With this substantial investment, Spain has entered the list of the top 15 countries with the highest military expenditures for the first time, signaling a major shift in its defense investment strategy.
Global Military Strength and Personnel Expansion
In terms of overall military strength, GFP ranks Spain as the 18th most powerful military force globally. The report indicates that Spain currently has approximately 117,000 active military personnel. To further bolster its armed forces, Spain plans to add 11,913 new military positions in 2026. Additionally, around 4,000 Spanish soldiers are currently deployed on missions worldwide, participating in international peacekeeping and security operations related to the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
International Context of the Strategic Shift
The surge in Spain’s defense budget comes at a critical time when the entire European continent is reassessing its security architecture. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, long-standing conflicts in the Middle East, and escalating tensions in various regions around the world form the broader context for this strategic adjustment. Faced with an increasingly complex security environment, many Western nations, particularly in Europe, have begun to increase their defense spending to strengthen their own defensive capabilities.
Geopolitics and Alliance Relations
This increase in military spending also reflects a shift in Spain’s role within its alliances. For a long time, the United States has been urging its European allies to increase their defense expenditures to meet the NATO target of spending 2% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defense. Although the government of Pedro Sánchez had previously shown reservations about raising defense spending to higher levels, the latest data shows that Spain is now responding with concrete actions to the demands of its allies and evolving security needs.
Seeking a Greater International Strategic Position
The significantly increased military funding will not only be used for modernizing military equipment and supporting more military operations but also aims at a deeper goal: enhancing Spain’s strategic importance on the international stage. By strengthening its military power, Spain is attempting to play a more active and influential role within NATO, the EU, and the global security system to better protect its national interests and regional stability.
