Ministerial Visit Sparks Protest, Journalist Attacked at the Scene
On Monday, a visit to the autonomous city of Ceuta by Spain’s Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz, sparked a protest by some citizens near the Assembly Palace (Palacio de la Asamblea). During the protest, a violent assault unexpectedly occurred.
A journalist from the local media outlet ‘El Pueblo de Ceuta’ was using his phone to film the scene when a male protester suddenly approached and forcefully struck his hands, causing the phone to fall to the ground. Several media outlets were covering the event at the time. The atmosphere was tense, with the minister’s convoy greeted by boos and insults, prompting police to set up a tight security cordon.
Misguided Attack Based on Appearance
The attack was reportedly a direct result of a serious misidentification based on racial appearance. The assailant, assuming the journalist was one of the migrants who had entered Ceuta illegally at the end of July due to his Muslim faith and ethnic appearance, attacked him. The incident exposes the xenophobic sentiment and social antagonism fueled by the recent wave of migration.
In fact, the assaulted journalist is a native-born resident of Ceuta, a reality completely at odds with the attacker’s assumption. This ironic mistake highlights the complexity and danger of the current social climate.
Official Condemnation and Police Investigation
The attacker reportedly backed down and apologized upon realizing he had assaulted a journalist on duty. However, the victim, viewing the matter as serious, insisted on filing a police report to press charges. The police are now investigating the case and working to identify the man involved.
The Autonomous City of Ceuta’s government quickly issued a public statement strongly condemning the attack. The government emphasized a “zero-tolerance” policy towards any form of violence and called on all citizens to remain calm, restrained, and steadfast to maintain social order amid the current tense situation.
