The Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) recently executed a major operation in southern Tenerife, dismantling a criminal network suspected of illegally importing, storing, and selling nitrous oxide, commonly known as ‘laughing gas’. The operation resulted in six arrests, with another six individuals under investigation. The staggering weight of the confiscated contraband makes it the second-largest nitrous oxide seizure in Europe to date.
Europe’s Second-Largest Seizure: Nearly 13 Tons of Contraband Confiscated
Led by the main regional investigation unit of the Civil Guard, law enforcement officers seized 10,394 nitrous oxide canisters, totaling nearly 13,000 kilograms (almost 13 tons). This seizure set the record for the second-highest amount ever recovered in Europe. Police arrested six suspects during the operation and initiated investigative proceedings against six others. They will face multiple charges, including organized crime, drug trafficking, endangering public health, and money laundering.
Following the Trail: From Nightclubs to the Criminal Core
The investigation began when police noticed the consumption of ‘laughing gas’ at several entertainment venues in southern Tenerife. Through in-depth tracking, a tightly structured and clearly divided criminal network emerged. The syndicate exhibited distinct hierarchical and familial characteristics, with core members using family ties to coordinate operations. They were respectively responsible for receiving shipments from overseas, managing logistics and warehousing, and handling final distribution across the island.
Unexpected Discoveries: Various Drugs and Cash Seized During Raids
During the four search operations, police made other significant discoveries alongside the massive haul of ‘laughing gas’. Law enforcement recovered 63,500 euros and 1,000 pounds in cash. Furthermore, they found a variety of other illicit drugs, including approximately 213 grams of cocaine, 599 grams of hashish, 1.4 kilograms of marijuana, and 46 grams of a novel psychoactive mixture known as ‘Tusi’ (pink cocaine). Authorities also confiscated pills, magic mushrooms, capsules, and cannabinoid-infused edibles, indicating the highly diversified nature of the gang’s criminal activities.

Currently, the investigation into the case is ongoing. The Spanish Civil Guard stated that as the probe deepens, the possibility of further arrests cannot be ruled out. The success of this operation has dealt a severe blow to the local drug distribution network, serving as a crucial deterrent, particularly against the growing trend of ‘laughing gas’ abuse among young people.
