Fly2Galicia Enters Santiago with Inaugural International Budget Routes
The newly established budget airline Fly2Galicia has confirmed that it will use Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport in the Spanish autonomous community of Galicia as its operational hub. The first flights are scheduled to take off on December 1, 2026. According to the announced fare structure, the minimum price for a one-way ticket to Milan, Italy, is 41 euros; one-way fares to Brussels, Belgium, Prague, Czech Republic, and Venice, Italy, start at 51 euros; and routes to Munich, Germany, start at 71 euros.
Furthermore, the airline plans to open Spanish domestic routes connecting Alicante, Granada, and Zaragoza. According to official sources, during the initial phase of operations, Fly2Galicia’s flights will be operated by an undisclosed European partner airline.
Wizz Air Expands Strategic Layout in the Galician Market
In anticipation of the expected peak in pilgrim traffic in 2027, the renowned European budget airline Wizz Air has also accelerated its strategic deployment in Santiago. The airline announced that it will pioneer new direct routes from Rome, Italy, and Warsaw, Poland, to Santiago this December.
A more central move is that by February next year, Wizz Air will establish a permanent operational base at Santiago Airport. By then, the airline plans to intensively add multiple popular Spanish domestic routes, covering destinations such as Malaga, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Zaragoza. The regional competition between these two budget airlines is expected to significantly reduce local air travel costs.
Increased Aviation Capacity Boosts Regional Tourism
As the terminus of the Camino de Santiago, the old town of Santiago de Compostela has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its historical architecture blending Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. The increase in budget airline routes not only provides convenient return options for pilgrims who have completed hundreds of kilometers of hiking but also effectively promotes in-depth tourism in the Galicia region.
With the influx of international and domestic passenger traffic, the local cultural tourism industry will directly benefit. Arriving passengers can more easily visit the famous Mercado de Abastos to taste Galician seafood and Albariño white wine, or extend their itineraries to surrounding scenic spots such as A Coruña, Vigo, and the Rías Baixas, known for their sunny beaches.
