Farewell to the Heat: Nationwide Significant Temperature Drop
After enduring days of scorching heat, Spain’s weather is set for a drastic shift starting this Friday. A low-pressure trough and the accompanying cold air mass will put an end to the current heatwave, causing a widespread drop in maximum temperatures across the country. According to forecasts by the meteorological service Meteored, the temperature drop will be especially severe in the northern, inland, and southeastern regions of the peninsula, with some areas potentially experiencing a decrease of 6 to 10°C within just 24 hours.
Specific Temperature Changes in Major Cities
This cooling trend will be most pronounced in the northern peninsula and the Ebro Valley. For instance, Meteored’s forecast indicates that temperatures in Burgos will drop from around 35°C on Wednesday to 26°C on Thursday; the maximum temperature in Leon will fall from 33°C to 23°C; and Lugo will see a decrease from 30°C to 22°C. Similarly, temperatures in Logrono will decline from 38°C to 31°C, and in Pamplona from 34°C to 28°C.
In the central and southeastern regions, although the extreme heat will ease, it will still feel quite hot. The maximum temperature in Albacete is expected to drop from 37°C to 32°C, while Murcia, which previously saw highs approaching 42°C, will drop to around 37°C. In the Andalusia region, temperatures in Granada will fall from 36°C to 30°C, and Jaen will see a decrease from 35°C to 31°C.
Unstable Weather Incoming: Warnings for Thunderstorms, Hail, and Strong Winds
Accompanying the temperature drop is an increase in weather instability. The low-pressure trough crossing the Iberian Peninsula will bring showers and thunderstorms, particularly concentrated in the northern and northeastern regions, though other inland areas may also be affected. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) noted that the weather situation will further evolve over the weekend. Experts from Meteored added warnings that some areas might experience severe local thunderstorms, hail, and strong gusts of wind. By Friday, minimum temperatures in certain regions such as Castilla y Leon and Teruel could drop to between 11°C and 13°C.
Weekend Outlook: DANA May Form and Persist
Moving into Saturday and Sunday, the low-pressure trough is expected to continue affecting Spain’s weather, keeping most regions relatively cool. However, parts of the north and east must remain alert for severe local thunderstorms and strong winds. Starting Sunday, the uncertainty of the weather forecast significantly increases. Meteored expert Samuel Biener stated that most prediction models suggest the interior of the low-pressure trough might evolve to form a “small isolated high-altitude cold drop”, known as a DANA. Should this occur, the thunderstorms and cooling trend could persist into early next week.
