Incident Overview and Emergency Response
At approximately 11:00 AM local time this Saturday, a rare accident occurred in the southern Madrid city of Fuenlabrada when a car plunged from a bridge. A small passenger car lost control while driving on the Calle de Grecia overpass, falling from a height of about 5 to 6 meters onto the parallel tracks of the Cercanías C-5 commuter train line below.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Despite the car being severely damaged, the driver managed to get out of the vehicle on their own after the impact. Medical personnel from Madrid’s emergency service, SUMMA 112, quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid before transporting the individual to a hospital for further examination and treatment. According to preliminary assessments, the injuries are considered potentially serious, although official details have not yet been released.
Widespread Rail Disruption
The incident caused significant disruptions to public transport in southern Madrid. Due to the wrecked vehicle and damaged railway infrastructure obstructing the tracks, train service on sections of the C-5 commuter line was suspended for more than two hours.
Some trains in operation were halted mid-route, and passengers had to be evacuated on foot under the guidance of staff. To mitigate travel disruptions, railway authorities quickly arranged for alternative bus services. The accident also caused physical damage to key electrical infrastructure, such as the overhead power lines, complicating the repair efforts.
Complex Cleanup and Investigation
The Community of Madrid Fire Department was tasked with the challenging cleanup operation. The process was delicate and time-consuming, as it required removing the wrecked car from a confined space while avoiding further damage to the tracks and surrounding equipment. After several hours of effort, the vehicle was successfully lifted from the rails, and train service gradually returned to normal.
Local police have now officially launched a full investigation to determine the specific cause of the bridge accident.
