The Murcia City Council in Spain recently launched a local emergency alert feature within its official application, “Tu Murcia.” Powered by real-time sensor data from the smart city platform, this system pushes customized notifications to citizens regarding extreme heat, deteriorating air quality, and civil protection weather warnings. The initiative aims to enhance public self-protection capabilities during unexpected emergencies.
Launching the Local Emergency Alert Feature
To further ensure the health and safety of its citizens, the Murcia City Council drew inspiration from the national emergency alert system (ES-Alert) and officially embedded a local warning module into the municipal “Tu Murcia” app. Statistics show that the application has accumulated approximately 80,000 downloads. In addition to providing basic public services such as public transport schedules, environmental monitoring, and a platform for reporting street security and sanitation issues, this newly launched alert feature significantly expands its practical value in the realm of public safety.

Real-Time Monitoring Based on City Sensors
The data network of this alert system is highly integrated, connecting directly to the Murcia City Council’s smart city management platform. Its information sources include weather stations, air quality monitoring stations, and various other IoT sensors distributed throughout the city. This automated data collection model ensures that when there is an extreme heat warning, increased air pollution, or extreme weather alerts issued by civil protection emergency departments, the system can instantly send notifications to users’ smartphones based on authentic and real-time updated data.
Supporting Personalized Configuration and Precise Zoning
Regarding the information distribution mechanism, the system grants users a high degree of autonomy. Citizens can configure the types of alerts they wish to receive within the app based on their personal needs and bind them to specific urban areas where they are located. This personalized push model not only improves the effectiveness of information delivery but also prevents citizens from being overwhelmed by irrelevant alerts. Especially for the elderly and vulnerable groups with underlying health conditions, this tool helps them obtain timely information and take targeted protective measures when facing extreme weather or environmental changes.
