Incident Unfolds: Crane Arm Lodged in Bridge Structure
The incident occurred on Saturday, August 23rd, on a section of the M-500 highway in Madrid, near the Club de Campo. According to reports from Madrid Emergency Services, a self-loading crane, traveling with its arm not fully retracted, violently collided with a pedestrian overpass. The powerful impact not only caused significant structural damage to the bridge but also left the crane’s arm firmly wedged within the structure. There were three people in the vehicle at the time. Madrid’s emergency medical services (SAMUR-Civil Protection) assessed them on-site, and one person was taken to the Hospital Clínico for observation due to minor contusions.
Emergency Response and Traffic Control
Following the accident, multiple emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. The Madrid Municipal Police took charge of traffic management, began documenting the incident, and implemented a full closure of the road section to ensure the safety of the rescue operation. To handle the complex situation, the Madrid Fire Department dispatched a total of six units to the scene.
A Complex Rescue: Heavy Machinery Used for Separation
Álvaro Macías, the head of the Madrid Fire Department on-site, stated that the rescue and clearing operation was technically very challenging. Because the crane’s arm was tightly jammed into the bridge’s structure, conventional methods were ineffective. Consequently, the fire department had to bring in a heavy-duty crane to assist, while specialized technicians performed precise technical cuts on parts of the structure. After several hours of intensive work, the team successfully separated the crane arm from the damaged bridge and began clearing debris from the road.
Aftermath and Investigation
Currently, the damaged pedestrian bridge is completely closed and cordoned off to prevent any further incidents. Officials have not yet announced a repair plan or timeline for the bridge. The specific cause of the accident, such as why the crane was being operated on the road without its arm properly stowed, awaits further investigation and reporting by the Madrid Municipal Police.
