A serious incident of mass violence recently occurred in the Balàfia neighborhood of Lleida, in Spain’s autonomous community of Catalonia. Dozens of individuals from different ethnic backgrounds engaged in an armed brawl at night, resulting in multiple injuries, including three stabbing victims. Local law enforcement agencies have launched a joint investigation and significantly reinforced night patrols in the affected area.
Night of Violence Sparked by Retaliation
Around 10:30 PM on the night of the incident, a large-scale physical conflict involving dozens of people shattered the quiet near the railway park area on Avenida de Rosa Parks in Lleida. According to the initial police investigation, the conflicting parties were primarily composed of individuals of Pakistani, Moroccan, and South American descent. During the incident, dozens of people of Pakistani origin, with their faces intentionally concealed, launched an organized and violent surprise attack on the other group, armed with knives and baseball bats.
String of Robberies Escalates Community Tensions
This violent conflict was not a random occurrence; its root cause lies in deep-seated, long-standing tensions between the local multi-ethnic communities. Recently, Pakistani-owned businesses in the neighborhood have been frequently targeted in robberies, severely undermining the sense of community safety. Although police responded promptly and arrested two Moroccan minors suspected of carrying out the robberies, this failed to quell the anger of the victimized business owners. On the evening following the arrests, the Pakistani group gathered and carried out this retaliatory attack, causing the security situation in the neighborhood to deteriorate rapidly.
Multiple People Injured and Hospitalized
The violent street clash left several people with injuries of varying severity. Three individuals suffered serious stab wounds, including two minors. Several other participants sustained bruises from blunt force trauma during the chaos. The Catalan Medical Emergency System (SEM) rushed to the scene after being alerted and urgently transported the injured to the Hospital Arnau de Vilanova and the CUAP Prat de la Riba for treatment. It is reported that the stabbing victims, who were initially in critical condition, are now in stable condition after receiving emergency care.
Law Enforcement Steps Up Security in the Area
To de-escalate the situation, the Lleida Urban Guard (Guàrdia Urbana), the Catalan riot police (ARRO), and public safety units were jointly deployed, quickly controlling and dispersing the crowd. During the operation, police arrested a 28-year-old Pakistani man on the spot, accused of assault with a deadly weapon during the chaos. Given the area’s complex demographic makeup and history of mass violent disputes, local police have announced the deployment of special reinforcements for high-intensity night patrols.
