Over 1.6 Million Terminals Technologically Ready
Spain’s local mobile payment giant, Bizum, is extending its reach from peer-to-peer transfers and online shopping to the physical retail market. According to the latest official data, the newly launched Bizum Pay solution is already compatible with over 85% of Point of Sale (POS) terminals in Spain. This means more than 1.6 million payment terminals nationwide are technologically equipped to support the service. However, for consumers to use this feature, merchants must first activate the service with their partner banks and agree on specific operational fees and terms.
Direct Bank Account Connection via NFC Technology
Regarding its technology and user experience, Bizum Pay primarily utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC). When checking out in a physical store, consumers can complete the transaction simply by tapping their smartphone near a compatible payment terminal. Unlike some traditional digital wallets that require pre-loading funds, this service allows for real-time deductions directly from the user’s linked bank account and also supports linking traditional bank cards. Furthermore, users can set Bizum Pay as their phone’s default payment app to further streamline the in-store payment process.
Challenging Global Payment Giants with a Massive User Base

After years of establishing a strong presence, Bizum has achieved exceptionally high market penetration in Spain. The platform currently boasts over 32 million registered users and is integrated with more than 100,000 online merchants. Leveraging this massive local user base, Bizum aims to compete directly with established international payment networks like Visa and Mastercard in the in-store payment arena. Although the company has not yet disclosed specific transaction volumes or active user numbers for Bizum Pay since its launch, management expects to define and announce clearer market share targets in the coming months.
Accelerated Rollout in September and European Expansion
The full implementation of Bizum Pay among physical merchants has been somewhat slowed by the traditional European summer holiday season. It is widely expected that the large-scale rollout of the service will accelerate significantly starting this September. On a broader scale, the acceptance of mobile payments by businesses in the Eurozone has seen explosive growth, surging from 36% at the beginning of 2024 to 68%, creating a highly favorable environment for Bizum’s offline expansion.
While strengthening its position in the Spanish market, Bizum’s international strategy is also progressing steadily. Currently, users in Spain can already make cross-border transfers to users in Italy (Italia) and Portugal (Portugal) through the system. According to the company’s long-term strategic plan, Bizum will further enhance system interoperability with other European countries starting in 2027, when France (Francia) and Germany (Alemania) will also be integrated into this regional payment ecosystem.
