A series of bizarre store burglaries has recently occurred in Spain’s Canary Islands, culminating in the arrest of a thief dressed as ‘Batman’ by the Civil Guard (Guardia Civil). The man is suspected of carrying out violent break-ins at several businesses on the island of Fuerteventura, with his unique criminal style and the police’s swift resolution drawing local attention.
Late-Night Alarm and Violent Break-in
According to a Civil Guard report, the most recent documented incident occurred in the early hours of August 12. At that time, an alarm sounded at a store on Calle Poseidón in Fuerteventura, prompting the operations center to dispatch a patrol. Upon arrival, officers found the shop’s entrance door and a side window severely damaged, with signs of being smashed violently. A preliminary check revealed that a cash register containing approximately €500 had been stolen. The damage to the property caused by the break-in was estimated at €750.
Surveillance Footage Locks on to ‘Batman’
The key breakthrough in the investigation came from the store’s internal surveillance footage. The video clearly recorded a man in the act, his face completely obscured by a mask of the comic book character Batman. He was also wearing black boots, khaki-colored trousers, and a black hooded sweatshirt, an outfit stylistically similar to the character. Based on this distinctive attire, investigators quickly identified a local suspect with matching clothing habits and initiated further surveillance.
Arrest and Recovery
After gathering sufficient evidence, the Spanish Civil Guard took action and successfully arrested the suspect. During a search, police discovered a full set of equipment used during the crime at a hiding spot, including the signature black mask, clothing, and a sledgehammer. Investigators believe this sledgehammer was the tool used to smash the shop windows. Additionally, police recovered the stolen cash register and €253 in cash. The ‘Batman’ burglar has now been handed over to the local duty court for processing. Police stated that they are continuing to investigate leads to determine if he is connected to other store burglaries that have occurred in recent months.
