According to information released on August 25 by Acaip-UGT, the union for Spanish prison staff, a serious violent assault against staff recently occurred at the Seville Prison Psychiatric Hospital, injuring several employees and highlighting the center’s long-standing security risks.
Incident Origin and Escalation
The incident took place in the facility’s Module 4. Before dinner, a male inmate began shouting loudly on the phone, causing a major disturbance. When a female staff member approached to ask him to lower his voice, the inmate became agitated and launched into a sustained tirade of verbal abuse and threats, including sexist remarks. The situation grew tense as his aggressive behavior escalated.
Violent Assault and Subdual
Given that the inmate’s behavior posed a security threat, staff initiated procedures to transfer him to an isolation unit. However, during the escort, the man suddenly broke free and attempted to escape. When several officers intervened, he became extremely aggressive, throwing punches and kicks at them, causing the situation to spiral out of control. After a struggle, the staff managed to subdue him collectively. Even after being restrained, the man continued his aggressive actions, spitting in the face of a female officer in a particularly vile act.
Union Condemnation and Security Failures
Following the incident, the prison staff union Acaip-UGT classified the assault as “especially serious.” The union once again publicly criticized the chronic and severe staff shortages and inadequate security equipment at the Seville Prison Psychiatric Hospital. Acaip-UGT emphasized that these structural deficiencies leave frontline staff without effective protection when dealing with high-risk violent conflicts, placing them in a precarious position.
A Dangerous Facility with Frequent Incidents
This violent assault is not an isolated event, as the center’s recent safety record is alarming. Not long ago, the prison psychiatric hospital experienced several other serious security incidents. For example, during the 2026 World Cup final, a fire broke out and there was an attempted self-harm by an inmate. In the week prior, an even more horrifying incident occurred when two inmates were murdered by their cellmate. This series of events points to severe management and security flaws at the facility.
