Atlantic Front Arrives, Reshaping the Weather Map
According to forecasts from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), several Atlantic frontal systems are continuing to affect Spain as August comes to a close, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms. A new front, associated with an Atlantic trough, is expected to enter the Iberian Peninsula from the west starting this Wednesday, further increasing weather instability.
Precipitation will be mainly concentrated in Galicia and other parts of the northwestern Iberian Peninsula. The meteorological service predicts that rainy weather will persist across northern Spain through Thursday and Friday, and may extend to the southwest, the northeastern coast, and the Balearic Islands.
North-Central Regions Get a Taste of Autumn, Temperatures Drop Below 10°C
The most notable feature of this weather event is a significant influx of cold air, which will peak between Thursday night and Friday morning. Many parts of Spain will experience temperatures well below the seasonal average, and residents in some areas may need a sweatshirt or jacket to fend off the morning chill.
Data shows that at least 13 provincial capitals are expected to see temperatures drop below 10°C between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Friday. In Castile and León, the minimum temperatures in its 11 provincial capitals are forecast to hover between just 8°C and 9°C. Similarly, cities like Lugo and Oviedo could also see lows of 9°C. This cooling will be most pronounced in the central and western parts of the Iberian Peninsula, where minimum temperatures could be 5°C to 10°C lower than the seasonal norm.
Mediterranean Coast Endures “Hot Nights,” Highlighting a Stark Contrast
In stark contrast to the cool conditions in the interior and the north, the hot weather along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, especially the muggy nights, shows no signs of abating. Coastal areas will continue to experience “tropical nights,” with minimum temperatures not falling below 20°C. In parts of the Valencian Community, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands, there may even be “torrid nights,” with lows staying above 25°C.
For instance, Barcelona’s minimum temperature on Friday morning is not expected to drop below 26°C, nearly double the projected low for Madrid. Furthermore, overnight lows in cities like Tarragona, Valencia, Palma, and Alicante are also forecast to remain high, between 24°C and 25°C.

The northwest, central, and vast interior regions will get an early taste of autumn’s coolness, while residents and tourists on the Mediterranean coast will still have to contend with intense heat and muggy nights.
