Festival Rockets Go Awry, Turning Celebration into Chaos
On August 26, in the town of Noáin in Spain’s northern region of Navarre, a traditional festival that was meant to be joyous turned into a scene of chaos. The incident occurred during a ceremonial rocket launch from the balcony of the town hall building. According to on-site reports, the first two rockets launched successfully, but the situation quickly deteriorated.
Initial speculation suggests that sparks from the first two rockets accidentally ignited the fuses of the subsequent ones. This caused three of the rockets to fail to launch upwards, instead shooting directly down into the dense crowd in the square below and exploding on impact. Additionally, about five other rockets exploded within the confines of the narrow balcony, posing a significant threat to those present.
At Least 50 Injured, Including Many Children
Following the accident, the scene descended into panic and confusion. The explosions in the crowd resulted in numerous injuries. According to official figures, at least 50 people required emergency medical attention, among them many children and teenagers who had come to watch the festivities. Most of the injuries were minor burns or wounds caused by the explosions.
The most seriously injured were three men between the ages of 40 and 50, who were rushed to the Navarra University Hospital for further examination and treatment due to the severity of their injuries. It was reported that two of them required hospitalization for close observation.
Emergency Response Deployed Swiftly
After the incident, multiple ambulances arrived quickly on the scene to provide aid. Some of the less seriously injured received treatment on site, while others were transported to nearby health centers. Medical personnel who were in the municipal offices at the time also assisted with first aid. The local government has confirmed that all injured individuals have received prompt medical care.
Accident Background and Initial Investigation
The ceremonial rocket launch was being operated by representatives from a local retirees’ club. At the time of the incident, the town hall balcony was crowded with people, including municipal officials, invited guests, and many children. The unexpected explosions also endangered those on the balcony, with several people suffering burns to their legs. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the accidental ignition of the rocket fuses is currently the leading theory.
