Cost Comparison by School Type: Over €7,000 Difference Between Public and Private
The survey data reveals that the cost disparity between different educational systems is the primary reason for the wide variation in family expenses. Specifically:
- Public schools: Average annual expenditure is approximately €1,294.
- State-subsidized schools (Concertado): Average annual expenditure jumps to €3,450.
- Private schools: Average annual expenditure is a staggering €8,761.
This means that families choosing private schools spend over €7,000 more per year than those in public schools, a very significant difference.
Significant Regional Differences: Madrid Leads the Nation in Family Education Costs
Geographically, education costs also vary noticeably across Spain’s regions. The Community of Madrid once again ranks as the most expensive region for back-to-school expenses, with an average annual cost of €3,512 per student. OCU analysis suggests this is directly related to the higher proportion of private schools in the region.
Following Madrid is Catalonia, with an average expenditure of €2,994. Data for other major regions include: the Valencian Community at about €2,190 and Andalusia at about €2,007. In contrast, the financial burden is relatively lighter for families in regions like Castilla y León (€1,546), Castilla-La Mancha (€1,525), and Galicia (€1,680).
Breakdown of Expenses: Tuition and Enrollment Fees are the Main Costs
Among the various expenses, tuition and enrollment fees constitute the largest portion. In Concertado schools, this amounts to an average of €1,681, accounting for 49% of the total annual cost. In private schools, this figure soars to an average of €5,898, making up 67% of the total.
Other significant expenses include:
- School meals: Annual average of about €97 in public schools, €133 in Concertado, and €156 in private schools.
- Extracurricular activities: Monthly average of about €70 in public schools, €86 in Concertado, and €113 in private schools.
- Textbooks: Average cost ranges between €161 and €302.
- School uniforms: Can add up to €224 to the expenses.
- School trips: Average around €176.
- School supplies: Approximately €89.
- Parents’ Association (AMPA) fees: About €43.
- Electronic devices: A tablet or computer for educational purposes requires an additional average expenditure of €236.

OCU highlights that the financial pressure of the back-to-school season stems not from a single expensive item but from the accumulation of numerous costs. The survey found that overall spending is particularly high for early childhood education (average €2,597) and primary school (average €2,355). In response, the consumer organization calls on regional governments across Spain to further expand free textbook programs and implement more effective measures to alleviate the financial burden on families for education. For families with multiple children, especially those opting for non-public education, the new school year’s expenses will represent a substantial and fixed annual cost.
