Midnight Scare: Young Child Cries for Help from Balcony
Recently in Palma, Spain, around 1:00 AM, the National Police (Policía Nacional) received multiple emergency calls. Several citizens reported that a young child was standing alone on the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment building, visibly distressed and crying loudly in a seemingly dangerous situation.
Police officers arrived quickly at the scene to find a group of concerned onlookers gathered below. The situation was urgent, and immediate action was required.
Police Emergency Rescue: Breaking Down the Door to Comfort the Child
To calm the child, an officer established communication with him from a neighbor’s balcony. The frightened boy told the police he was home alone, that his grandmother had gone out to pick up a relative, and he couldn’t open the door himself. After being soothed and persuaded by the officer, the child moved back inside to a safer spot.
Given the inability to contact a guardian and the critical nature of the situation, police decided to take forceful action after obtaining authorization. Firefighters assisted in breaking down the apartment door, successfully entering the residence and bringing the terrified child to safety.
Neighbors’ Testimony: Not the First Time He Was Left Alone That Night
The on-site investigation revealed even more worrying details. According to neighbors, they had found the child crying alone in the hallway with his apartment door wide open as early as 10:00 PM that same evening. A neighbor then contacted the grandmother by phone.
However, the grandmother didn’t return until half an hour after the call and reacted with annoyance to the neighbor’s well-intentioned concern. Shortly after taking the child back inside, she left him alone again, which ultimately led to the dangerous incident on the balcony.
Grandmother Arrested on Suspicion of Child Abandonment
Just as the police were managing the scene, the child’s grandmother returned to the apartment. She initially claimed she had only stepped out for a moment to go shopping and that the child had been alone for just ten minutes. However, her statement clearly contradicted the neighbors’ testimony and the evidence at the scene.
As the child’s mother was at work and could not come immediately, the police contacted other relatives to come and care for the boy. Ultimately, the National Police arrested the severely negligent grandmother on suspicion of child abandonment.
