Patrolling Military Vehicle Ambushed, 12 Arrested by Police
In the early hours of August 27, a military vehicle on patrol in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta was violently attacked. According to a local police spokesperson, about 70 migrants threw stones and other objects at the vehicle from both sides of the road.
To escape the attack, the soldiers in the vehicle got out and tried to run, but they were pursued by the crowd. In the chaos, one soldier was hit in the back by a stone, causing minor injuries. The soldier then called for local police support. Several police cars arrived at the scene, and the attackers quickly dispersed. Police subsequently arrested 12 individuals involved in the incident, who were confirmed to be Moroccan citizens.
The Migrant Crisis Behind the Attack
This attack was not an isolated incident. Its deeper context is the severe migrant crisis that Ceuta has been facing recently. At the end of July, misinformation about Spain’s border policies spread on social media, triggering a massive wave of border crossings.
In a short period, around 80,000 people, primarily from Morocco, flooded into Ceuta by swimming and other means, constituting one of Spain’s most serious border crises in recent years. The influx of a large number of irregular migrants has placed immense social and security pressure on the city, which has an area of only about 18.5 square kilometers.
Stranded Migrants and Repatriation: Ceuta’s Ongoing Challenge
Since the crisis began, the Spanish government has collaborated with Moroccan authorities to repatriate the vast majority of those who crossed the border. However, at the time of the attack, several thousand irregular migrants remained stranded in Ceuta.
The living conditions for these stranded individuals are precarious, with many setting up makeshift shelters on beaches and other areas, such as those seen on Tranquilín Beach on August 15. Spanish authorities have stated they are accelerating the repatriation process for the remaining migrants, but the process is fraught with challenges. Conflicts like this recent attack continue to escalate the tense situation in the area.
