Barcelona High-Speed Train Line Fully Suspended Due to Power Failure
On Sunday morning, high-speed rail service connecting Barcelona and Girona was forced to a halt due to a power supply failure. The incident has paralyzed the line, affecting the travel plans of a large number of passengers.
Cause of Failure and Scope of Impact
According to a statement from Adif (Spain’s Administrator of Railway Infrastructures), the direct cause of the incident was a detached catenary. The fault occurred near Barcelona’s La Sagrera station, leading to a complete service interruption on the section between Barcelona-Sants station and the Mollet junction (Bifurcación Mollet).
The failure has affected the normal operation of the Barcelona-Figueres line, impacting all long-distance, high-speed, and regional trains from all rail operators, which are unable to pass.
Stranded Passengers and Emergency Plan Activation
Following the incident, Catalonia’s Civil Protection agency (Protecció Civil) reported that at least two moving trains were trapped on the affected section with passengers on board. To manage the situation, the pre-alert phase of the “Ferrocat” railway emergency plan has been activated to coordinate response efforts.
Repair Progress and Passenger Ticket Options
Adif has confirmed that technical teams have been dispatched to the site to carry out emergency repairs, stating they aim to resolve the issue and restore service “as soon as possible”. Meanwhile, Renfe (Spain’s national railway company) has announced that all passengers holding tickets for the affected services can change their tickets for another time or request a full refund at no cost to minimize their losses.
