Government Increases Diesel Tax Rebate to Tackle Rising Prices
To mitigate the impact of soaring energy prices on consumers, the Spanish government has significantly increased the tax rebate for diesel from 5 cents to 20 cents per liter, effective September 1, 2026. The mechanism stipulates that a larger subsidy is activated when the year-on-year price increase for diesel exceeds 15%. In contrast, gasoline prices increased by 7.3% over the same period, failing to meet the criteria, and will therefore maintain the 5-cent-per-liter rebate in September. Data shows that diesel prices have risen for eight consecutive weeks, with the current average price reaching €1.861 per liter, a cumulative increase of over 23.7% since the discount was reduced in early July.
