Project Overview and Investment Plan
The Madrid City Council has officially approved the comprehensive renovation plan for the “Gran Via del Sureste” in the Ensanche de Vallecas. With a total investment of 13.1 million euros, construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026 and is expected to be fully completed by the spring of 2028.
The project will cover the area from Avenida de las Suertes to the roundabout next to the A-3 highway, transforming a total area of 21,000 square meters. This initiative is a major step by the Madrid City Council to promote the development of the city’s southern districts and improve residents’ quality of life.
A New Multifunctional Urban Living Room
According to the plan, this new 560-meter-long and 37.6-meter-wide boulevard will be transformed into a multifunctional core public space for the district. Once completed, the avenue will feature designated walking and relaxation areas, children’s playgrounds, senior fitness and wellness zones, and street calisthenics spots to meet the daily activity needs of residents of all ages.
One of the project’s highlights is the construction of a 180-square-meter landscape fountain, equipped with water screen shows and an integrated lighting system. Additionally, the urban public furniture, LED lighting systems, and public drinking water facilities throughout the area will be completely updated and upgraded.
Parallel Development of Sustainable Transport and Ecological Greening
The core concept of this renovation is to reallocate road space, prioritizing the rights of way for pedestrians, bicycles, and public transport. The project will build new physically separated bike lanes to ensure riding safety. Ecologically, 875 new trees are planned to be planted, complemented by extensive landscaping to create urban green spaces and shaded corridors with rich biodiversity. Sustainable urban drainage systems will also be introduced.
Regarding traffic, the most striking feature is the implementation of dedicated, bidirectional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes on the avenue. Operating on an independent platform unaffected by regular vehicular traffic, this system will provide efficient and convenient public transport services for six new urban developments in southeast Madrid (Valdecarros, Ensanche de Vallecas, Los Berrocales, Los Ahijones, El Canaveral, and Los Cerros).
Establishing the Southeast Developmental Axis
This project is not just the renovation of a single street, but a part of Madrid’s grand urban development blueprint. This section is the starting point of a planned 16-kilometer giant green corridor, which will eventually connect all the newly developed districts in the southeast.
The entire engineering project falls under the “Madrid South Development Strategy.” This strategy aims to comprehensively promote the socioeconomic and environmental development of several districts, including Latina, Carabanchel, Usera, Villaverde, Puente de Vallecas, Villa de Vallecas, Moratalaz, Vicalvaro, and San Blas-Canillejas, through a series of urban renewal projects.
