Spain’s tourism sector has reached an unprecedented peak this summer. According to official data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), several key indicators set new all-time highs in July, further solidifying tourism’s position as a core pillar of the country’s economy.
Record-Breaking Tourist Arrivals and Spending
Data shows that in July alone, Spain received approximately 11.5 million international tourists, a 4.6% increase compared to the same month last year, breaking the country’s record for single-month foreign arrivals. Simultaneously, the growth in tourist spending was even more significant. Total spending by international visitors reached about €18.218 billion for the month, a substantial 10.9% year-on-year increase. The rate of spending growth far outpaced the increase in tourist numbers, indicating a continuous rise in per capita expenditure.
The UK Remains the Top Source Market
An analysis of visitor origins shows that the United Kingdom continues to hold its leading position as Spain’s largest source market. In July, around 2.2 million British tourists visited Spain, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%. They were followed by France and Germany, contributing nearly 1.6 million (up 2.3% YoY) and about 1.2 million (up 2.3% YoY) visitors, respectively. This pattern has remained stable throughout the year, with cumulative data from January to July showing that the UK, France, and Germany have sent approximately 11.5 million, over 7.2 million, and nearly 6.9 million tourists, respectively, forming the backbone of Spain’s international visitor base.

Analysis of Spending Contribution by Country
In terms of spending, British tourists were also the biggest contributors, with a total expenditure of about €3.038 billion in July, up 4.8% year-on-year. Notably, spending growth from German and French tourists was particularly strong, reaching €1.751 billion and €1.644 billion respectively, with high year-on-year growth rates of 11.5% and 12.6%. Looking at the first seven months of the year, the cumulative total spending by foreign tourists in Spain has already exceeded €82.054 billion, a 7.8% increase compared to the same period last year, highlighting the significant boost tourism provides to the Spanish economy.
Economic Benefits and Social Challenges
The peak tourist season brings immense business opportunities and economic benefits to Spain’s hospitality, dining, transportation, and retail sectors. However, the continuously rising number of visitors also poses a severe test for the infrastructure in popular tourist cities and regions. Pressures on public services, such as housing shortages, crowded public transport, and sanitation, are mounting. Striking a balance between enjoying the economic dividends of tourism and maintaining the quality of life for local residents and ensuring urban sustainability has become a critical issue for Spain. Nevertheless, the latest data reaffirms that Spain’s allure as a premier global travel destination remains undiminished.
