Overall Calendar Planning and Local Holiday Additions
The Madrid Regional Government officially approved the 2027 public holiday calendar proposal on September 30. According to relevant laws, the total number of paid statutory holidays in Spain is 14 days per year. The regional government has announced 12 unified regional holidays. The remaining 2 local holidays will be determined and announced by individual municipal governments within the Madrid region based on local traditions in the coming weeks.
First Quarter Holiday Distribution and Holy Week Schedule
The first quarter of 2027 offers the public multiple opportunities for long weekends. New Year’s Day on January 1 falls on a Friday, allowing the public to enjoy a direct three-day weekend; the subsequent Epiphany (Three Kings’ Day) on January 6 falls on a Wednesday.
March is the most concentrated month for public holidays in Madrid in 2027. The Madrid region has decided to restore San Jose (St. Joseph’s Day) on March 19 as a statutory holiday for the year. Since this day is a Friday, it creates another three-day long weekend. This is immediately followed by the traditional Semana Santa (Holy Week) holidays, with March 25 (Maundy Thursday) and March 26 (Good Friday) both being statutory days off, forming the longest holiday period of the spring.
Late Spring to Summer Holiday Adjustments

As spring progresses, the distribution of holidays is significantly affected by weekends. There are no regional statutory holidays in April. International Workers’ Day on May 1 falls on a Saturday, while the Dia de la Comunidad de Madrid (Day of the Community of Madrid) on May 2 happens to be a Sunday. According to the 2027 calendar, this Sunday holiday will not be rolled over to Monday, May 3.
August in summer provides a rare extended weekend. The Asuncion de la Virgen (Assumption of Mary) on August 15 is a Sunday, and the Madrid Regional Government has decided to roll this day off over to Monday, August 16, thereby creating another summer long weekend for the public.
Autumn and Winter Statutory Holiday Nodes
In the final months of 2027, the statutory holidays are relatively evenly distributed. The Fiesta Nacional de Espana (National Day of Spain) on October 12 is a Tuesday, offering some people the possibility of taking a single day off to create a four-day “bridge holiday” (puente). Todos los Santos (All Saints’ Day) on November 1 falls on a Monday, naturally forming a three-day weekend.
December contains three important statutory holidays: the Spanish Constitution Day on December 6 (Monday) and the Immaculate Conception on December 8 (Wednesday) are separated by just one day, representing the traditional intensive holiday period at the end of the year; additionally, Christmas Day on December 25 falls on a Saturday in 2027.
