Overview of the Spanish E-commerce Market in Q1 2026
According to official statistics from the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC), the total turnover of the Spanish e-commerce market reached 29.643 billion euros in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 15% increase compared to the same period last year. This growth was accompanied by a significant rise in transaction activity, with over 549 million transactions accumulated during the quarter, a 16% year-on-year increase. This reflects that online consumption has been deeply integrated into the daily lives of the Spanish public.
Industry Consumption Structure: Tourism and Services Dominate
From an industry distribution perspective, service-oriented consumption, especially tourism-related businesses, was the primary contributor to online transaction turnover. The specific data is as follows:
- Travel agencies and tour operators: Accounted for 8.7% of total turnover, ranking first.
- Air transport: Followed closely, accounting for 6.4%.
However, analyzing from the dimension of transaction volume, gambling and betting transactions topped the list with a 9.9% share. This indicates that in addition to traditional online shopping for physical goods, service-oriented consumption such as tourism, transportation, and online entertainment also plays a crucial role in the Spanish e-commerce ecosystem.
Capital Flow Analysis: Significant Cross-Border Transaction Deficit
Data from the first quarter of 2026 revealed distinct cross-border transaction characteristics in the Spanish e-commerce market. Of the total turnover, a staggering 56% of consumption flowed to overseas merchants, while transactions related to domestic Spain (domestic consumption and purchases by foreign consumers in Spain) only accounted for 44%.
- Spain’s outbound consumption: The consumption by Spanish consumers and businesses on overseas platforms reached 16.604 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 14%. Among them, 94.1% of transactions were with merchants in the European Union.
- Foreign consumption in Spain: Meanwhile, consumption by foreign consumers and businesses on Spanish e-commerce platforms was 3.833 billion euros, up 15.3% year-on-year.
The data clearly shows that Spain has a massive trade deficit in the e-commerce sector, with capital outflow far exceeding inflow.
Spanish Domestic E-commerce Market: Steady Growth
Despite the substantial cross-border transaction deficit, Spain’s domestic e-commerce market itself showed robust vitality. In the first quarter, e-commerce turnover generated entirely within Spain reached 9.207 billion euros, achieving a 17% year-on-year growth, which outpaced the overall market.
Among domestic transactions, public administration, taxes, and social security-related businesses became the category with the highest turnover, accounting for 8.5%. Overall, at the beginning of 2026, Spain’s online transactions maintained double-digit growth in both value and volume, becoming a key force driving the development of its consumption and service industries.
