Just got back from a trip along Spain’s east coast, and I feel completely recharged by the Mediterranean sun! When people mention the east coast, Valencia is often the first thing that comes to mind. But this coastline is packed with hidden gems, perfect for a road trip. Renting a car, making spontaneous stops, and experiencing the true Spanish ‘slow life’ is the way to go.
Must-Visit Cities and Towns
Valencia
Valencia is, of course, a must-visit. From the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences to the charming old town, and not to forget the irresistible paella. Friendly tip: The most traditional Valencian paella is actually made with rabbit and chicken. If you’re craving seafood, make sure to order a ‘Paella de Marisco’!
Peñíscola
This place, featuring some of the best attractions in central-eastern Spain, served as the filming location for Meereen in Game of Thrones! It’s a medieval castle built on a massive rock, surrounded by the sea on three sides—the views are absolutely stunning. Wandering through the narrow alleys of the old town and finding a restaurant with a sea view is pure bliss.

Itinerary and Foodie Tips
Personally, I think the classic route is to drive south from Barcelona, passing through Tarragona and Peñíscola, and ending in Valencia and Alicante. If you have extra time, head further south to Calpe to see its iconic rock formation. When it comes to food, besides paella, the local snacks are also a highlight among the many tourist spots on Spain’s east coast.
| City | Local Food Recommendations |
| Valencia | Agua de Valencia, Fartons |
| Alicante | Turrón, Arroz a banda |

In conclusion, Spain’s east coast is definitely a destination worth exploring in depth, offering a perfect blend of history, modernity, natural scenery, and delicious food. I highly recommend it to all sun and sea lovers. Have you visited any other great spots on the east coast? Or do you have any special food recommendations?
