If you’re a hiking and mountaineering enthusiast, perhaps looking for something different from coastal scenic spots in Tarragona, Spain, then Picos de Europa is your paradise. It spans three autonomous communities and boasts rugged mountains and magnificent views. In summer, it’s a sea of green, with cows and sheep grazing peacefully in the valleys; in winter, it becomes a snow-covered wonderland. I highly recommend hiking the famous Cares Gorge Trail (Ruta del Cares). While it’s a bit challenging, the scenery along the way is absolutely worth it. Oh, and the local mountain cheeses are incredibly delicious—you have to try them!
Martian Landscapes: Bardenas Reales Natural Park
Want to experience what it’s like to land on Mars without leaving Earth? Head to Bardenas Reales in the Navarre region! This is a rare semi-desert landscape on the Iberian Peninsula, where wind and water erosion have sculpted bizarre rock formations and canyons, creating a desolate yet majestic beauty. Game of Thrones was also filmed here
! Driving on the dirt tracks, you’ll feel like the star of a post-apocalyptic movie. I suggest visiting at sunset when the golden light bathes the ochre-colored earth—it’s breathtakingly beautiful.
A Divine Masterpiece: Playa de las Catedrales (Cathedral Beach)
This beach in the Galicia region is my personal number one. Its most magical feature is that only at low tide do the immense stone arches, carved by the sea, fully reveal themselves. They resemble majestic Gothic cathedrals standing on the sand, which is how it got the name ‘Cathedral Beach’. Important Tip: Before you go, you must check the official website for the tide times for that day. You can only walk down to the arches for about an hour or two around low tide! Lazy people Visitors short on time who miss this window will only be able to see it from the cliffs above.
