Hello everyone! I’ve recently moved to Spain and have been reading some history books, finding it absolutely epic. However, it seems that for many of us, when we think of Spain, the only figures that come to mind are Columbus and Don Quixote. In reality, Spain’s history is full of remarkable figures. So today, I’d like to get the ball rolling and share a few Spanish heroes who I find particularly inspiring!
El Cid Campeador
When talking about Spain’s national heroes, El Cid is an essential figure. His real name was Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a nobleman and military leader from the Kingdom of Castile during the Reconquista. He was a valiant warrior, revered by the Moors who called him ‘Sidi,’ the origin of his title ‘El Cid.’ His life story is legendary, marked by incredible military achievements. He served both Christian kings and Muslim rulers, making him a complex yet charismatic historical figure. His deeds were immortalized in Spain’s earliest epic poem, ‘El Cantar de mio Cid’ (The Song of my Cid), which is still celebrated today.

The Catholic Monarchs
This isn’t one person, but a royal couple: Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Their marriage laid the foundation for the unification of modern Spain. During their reign, Spain completed the final stage of the Reconquista with the conquest of Granada, ending nearly 800 years of Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula. Of course, their most famous achievement was financing Columbus’s voyage, which launched the momentous Age of Discovery and transformed Spain into a world-class empire. They are certainly among the most influential figures, true historical superheroes of Spain.
To make it easier to understand, here is a simple table comparing these heroes:
| Hero | Main Achievements | Era |
| El Cid | Legendary knight of the Reconquista, military genius | 11th Century |
| Isabella I | Unified Spain, funded Columbus, completed the Reconquista | 15th-16th Century |
| Ferdinand II | Co-ruled with Isabella I, master of diplomacy | 15th-16th Century |
Spain’s history has many more heroes, of course. For instance, there’s Agustina de Aragón, who led the resistance against Napoleon’s invasion, and King Pelagius of Asturias (Pelayo), who initiated the Reconquista. Everyone has their own list of heroes.
