Hey football fans living in Spain, while watching La Liga recently, a very interesting topic came to mind that’s guaranteed to spark a heated debate: Who is the greatest right-back in the history of Spanish football?
When we talk about Spain’s golden generation, names like Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Villa, and Torres, the midfield and forward maestros, always come to mind. In defense, Puyol and Piqué were also colossal figures. But the right-back position seems to have always been a point of contention. In my opinion, there are a few heavyweight contenders.
Candidate Analysis
Míchel Salgado
Long-time Real Madrid fans will surely remember Salgado. He was the iron-willed warrior on the right flank of the first Galácticos era! His style can be summed up in one word: ‘tough’! With ferocious defending, a tenacious attitude, and endless stamina, he tirelessly patrolled the wing, earning him the nickname ‘Il Due’. While his attacking skills weren’t the most refined, his presence and defensive contributions were indispensable in that star-studded team. Unfortunately, his national team career was somewhat ill-timed, as he missed Spain’s peak dynasty.
Sergio Ramos
Yes, it’s him! Many people now remember him only as a world-class center-back, but let’s not forget that Ramos started his career as a top-tier right-back! Whether at Sevilla, in his early days at Real Madrid, or during Spain’s 2008 Euro and 2010 World Cup victories, he was the undisputed starting right-back. His physical attributes, speed, explosiveness, and attacking drive were all-time great for the position. It goes without saying that a man who can become a team’s spiritual leader while playing as a full-back is a testament to his incredible ability.

Dani Carvajal
As the active representative, Carvajal’s skills and honors absolutely warrant his inclusion in this discussion. He was a key player during Real Madrid’s three-peat Champions League era—balanced in attack and defense, and full of fighting spirit. Compared to his predecessors, Carvajal’s technique and crossing ability are arguably more well-rounded. Although he doesn’t have a height advantage, his defensive positioning and dueling skills are excellent. If Salgado was the brute hardman and Ramos the all-around warrior, then Carvajal is the epitome of the modern full-back.
Overall Comparison
To make the comparison more direct, I’ve created a simple table:
| Player | Peak Defending | Peak Attacking | Trophies | Mentality |
| Salgado | 9/10 | 7/10 | Glorious club career | 10/10 |
| Ramos | 8.5/10 | 10/10 | Success with club & country | 10/10 |
| Carvajal | 8.5/10 | 8.5/10 | Glorious club career | 9/10 |
If we’re judging solely based on achievements and dominance at the right-back position, I personally lean towards Ramos during his time with the national team. He was instrumental in bringing Spain its two most important trophies, which is a huge point in favor of these legendary Spanish right-backs. Of course, Salgado’s grit and Carvajal’s consistency each have their own merits. What do you all think? Who is the greatest Spanish right-back of all time in your book? Let’s discuss in the comments!
