I had some free time recently and got curious about which teams have been the true mainstays and powerhouses throughout La Liga’s long history. We’re all used to looking at the seasonal rankings, but seeing all the points from every season combined is truly impressive!
I took the time to compile the all-time La Liga table since its founding in 1929. This table simply adds up the points from every season, without adjusting for the change from the ‘2 points for a win’ system to the ‘3 points for a win’ system, so veteran teams that have played more seasons, as shown in this historical season ranking table, have a slight advantage. Nevertheless, it’s definitely a solid measure of a club’s historical legacy!

As you can see from the table, Real Madrid and Barça are in a league of their own, truly living up to their legendary rivalry with points totals that are incredibly close. Atlético Madrid is also firmly established as the third force. Speaking of where teams rank in the all-time standings, it’s worth noting that Athletic Bilbao, alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona, is one of only three clubs to have never been relegated from the top flight—an incredibly impressive historical legacy! While Valencia and Sevilla have had their ups and downs over the years, their foundations are clearly strong.
