Hey everyone, especially those living in Spain or on their Spanish learning journey! I’ve recently developed a keen interest in Spanish history. Reading books alone can be a bit dry, so I started looking for some BBC documentaries on Spanish history. It’s a fantastic way to practice listening skills and visually grasp the country’s dramatic changes—truly killing two birds with one stone!
After some searching, I’ve found that the quality of history documentaries produced right here in Spain is incredibly high. Their storytelling, visual quality, and historical accuracy are all top-notch. For those of us learning Spanish, they are excellent immersive learning materials. The speaking pace in something like the historical documentary series on El Cid might seem a bit fast at first, but with Spanish subtitles, you’ll get used to it after a few viewings.

My Personal Watchlist Recommendations
Here are a few documentaries about Spanish history that I’ve been watching recently or have on my to-watch list—I highly recommend them! First up is Isabel. Although it’s a TV series, its historical accuracy is so high it could pass for a documentary. It chronicles the legendary life of Queen Isabella I of Castile. There are also many series produced by Spain’s national television, RTVE, such as Memoria de España, which systematically covers Spanish history from ancient times to the present day. It’s truly impressive. Most of these are available to watch for free on the official RTVE Play website, and it’s quite accessible for international users too.
Quick Reference Table
| Documentary/Series Title | Key Historical Period | Recommended Platform |

| Memoria de España | Prehistory to Modern Era | RTVE Play |
| El Cid | 11th Century | Amazon Prime |

Of course, there are many more great documentaries out there. Does anyone else have any hidden gems to recommend? Perhaps something about the Franco era? Anyway, feel free to discuss and share your resources in the comments below!
