As someone new to Spain, beyond enjoying the sun and food by watching Spanish historical dramas online, my greatest pleasure has been binge-watching shows at home! I’ve always been fascinated by Spanish history and discovered that their historical dramas have superb production quality. They are an excellent way to understand the country’s culture and customs. Today, I’m sharing my personal list of Spanish historical series that I guarantee you won’t be able to stop watching!
Royal Chronicles: The Monarchs Who Changed History
When it comes to Spanish historical series, you can’t miss the stories of its larger-than-life kings and queens. If you enjoy political intrigue and court drama in Spanish historical dramas, these next few are truly epic:
- Isabel: Highly recommended
! This series focuses on Queen Isabella I of Castile, from her youth to her ascension to the throne, the unification of Spain, and her sponsorship of Christopher Columbus’s voyage. The production is exquisite, with perfectly recreated costumes and sets. After watching, it feels like you’ve taken a complete course on Spanish history.
- Carlos, Rey Emperador: Continuing the story from ‘Isabel’, this series follows her grandson, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Watch as he navigates the complex politics of Europe to build an ‘empire on which the sun never sets.’ The scope is grander, and the scenes are more magnificent.
More Than Just Kings and Queens
Beyond the royal-themed shows you’ll find in the rankings for Spanish historical dramas
, many series also focus on ordinary people caught in the sweep of history, and their stories are deeply moving.

Take El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Ministry of Time), for example. With its wildly imaginative concept, it’s often called Spain’s answer to ‘Doctor Who.’ It’s about a secret government agency that protects Spain’s history from being altered. The team travels to different eras for missions, meeting historical figures like Cervantes and Picasso. It’s both fun and educational, making it a perfect way to learn about Spanish history!
There’s also La catedral del mar (Cathedral of the Sea) and its sequel, the now dated but still classic, Los herederos de la tierra (Heirs to the Land). These tell the story of common people in medieval Barcelona striving to build the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, a tale filled with love, hate, and struggles against fate. To help you choose, I’ve put together a simple summary table:
| Series Title | Historical Period | One-Liner |
| Isabel | Late 15th Century | The making of a queen, an epic of Spanish unification. |
| Carlos, Rey Emperador | Early 16th Century | Builder of a global empire, a European Game of Thrones. |
| El Ministerio del Tiempo | Across all eras | A fun, time-traveling history lesson. |
| La catedral del mar | 14th Century | A commoner’s epic, Barcelona’s own ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’. |
This list is just the tip of the iceberg; there are so many great Spanish shows out there! Do you have any hidden gems to recommend? Or what are you currently watching? Feel free to leave a comment below to discuss. Let’s watch shows and learn Spanish together!
