Watching Barça’s recent games, I’ve been blown away by Lamine Yamal. Seeing someone so young dominate the right flank got me thinking about the great right wingers in Spanish football history. So, I’m starting this thread to share my personal ranking of Spain’s all-time best right wingers. This is purely my opinion, and I welcome everyone to discuss and add their own thoughts!
Titans and Legends of Yore
When talking about Spanish wingers, one name is unavoidable: Francisco Gento. Although the great Gento often played on the left, he was the benchmark for wingers of his era. His phenomenal speed and dribbling ability, along with an unprecedented six European Cup titles, set him apart. Following him is another Real Madrid legend, Amancio Amaro. He was one of Europe’s top right wingers in the 60s, known for his exquisite technique, and was a key figure in Spain’s 1964 European Championship victory.

The Modern-Era Standard Bearers and a “Living Fossil”
If we’re talking about a representative of modern Spanish right wingers, the first name that comes to mind is Joaquín Sánchez! The career of this Real Betis ‘living fossil’ spanned over 20 years, and his signature step-overs on the wing are a nostalgic memory for countless fans. His dribbling, crossing, and seemingly endless energy made him a unique spectacle in La Liga. He was more than just a player; he was a symbol of spirit. In my book, Joaquín is definitely among the top three right wingers in Spanish history.
There were many other excellent right wingers during this period, such as Athletic Bilbao’s legend Joseba Etxeberria. Although he was often seen more as a forward, his impact as one of the great Spanish historical right wingers
was truly impressive.
My Personal Top 5 Ranking
Regarding the debate over the greatest right winger in Spanish history, I’ll be bold and propose my personal top five. Let’s see if it holds up:
| Rank | Player | Active Era | Key Attributes |
| 1 | Gento | 1950s-1970s | Absolute speed, dribbling, decorated champion |
| 2 | Joaquín | 2000s-2020s | Step-overs, dribbling, professional longevity |
| 3 | Amancio | 1960s-1970s | Fine technique, cutting inside, European champion |
| 4 | Luis García | 2000s | Clever movement, long shots, big-game player |
| 5 | Yamal | 2020s-Present | Exceptional talent, ball control |
Including Yamal on this list might be getting ahead of myself, but his talent is just too dazzling to ignore, and the expectations for him are immense. Perhaps in a few years, this entire list will need a reshuffle. So, what are your thoughts on this ranking of Spanish historical right wingers? Have I missed any overlooked gems?
