Hello everyone! As someone new to Spain, I’ve noticed that whenever football comes up, a topic often seen in Spain’s historical football performance rankings, my friends always bring up Real Madrid and Barça.
Indeed, they are giants among giants. However, the rich history of Spanish football features more than just these two bright stars. Today, I want to explore some of the ‘living fossil’ clubs that also boast a century of history, some even older than the ‘big two’.
The Forefather of Spanish Football - Recreativo de Huelva
When it comes to the oldest, the title must go to Recreativo de Huelva. Founded in 1889, it’s a full decade older than FC Barcelona! The club was established by British workers at the local copper mines, who effectively brought the spark of modern football to the Iberian Peninsula. Although Recreativo now spends most of its time struggling in the lower divisions, its title as the ‘Dean of Spanish Football’—being Spain’s oldest football team—is an honor no giant can take away. That’s true historical depth.
The Basque Lions - Athletic Bilbao
Another club I personally admire greatly is Athletic Bilbao. They are one of La Liga’s founding members and, like Real Madrid and Barcelona, are one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from the top division. Their history is filled with legends, including many that could feature on a list of historical Spanish football strikers. What truly commands respect is their long-standing policy of exclusively signing players with Basque heritage. In today’s highly commercialized world of football, this unyielding commitment is a legend in itself. Their home ground, the San Mamés stadium, is known as ‘The Cathedral’ and is a nightmare for any visiting team.

Here is a quick overview of when some of these veteran clubs were founded, giving a sense of their historical significance:
| Club | Founded | Notes |
| Recreativo de Huelva | 1889 | Spain’s oldest club |
| Athletic Bilbao | 1898 | Basque-only player policy |
| FC Barcelona | 1899 | Founded by Swiss national Joan Gamper |
| RCD Espanyol | 1900 | Founded by local Spaniards in Barcelona |
| Real Madrid | 1902 | FIFA Club of the 20th Century |
There are also other veteran teams over a century old, like Real Sociedad and Sevilla. Each club has a unique history behind it, carrying the pride and memory of its city.
