After living in Spain for a while, it feels like olive oil and ham run through my veins. Brands like 5J and Joselito are undoubtedly exquisite, but eating them daily is hard on the wallet. So, my daily staple mostly depends on the various supermarkets’ “white label hams”. Today, I boldly open a discussion to share my experience with several options I’ve tried, purely my personal opinions. Experts are welcome to supplement or correct me!
The main evaluation focuses on Spain’s three most visited supermarkets: Mercadona, Carrefour, and Lidl. I bought pre-sliced ham and mainly compared two grades: entry-level Jamón Serrano Reserva and the slightly premium Jamón de Cebo Ibérico. After all, these are the two most commonly consumed types in everyday life according to the 5J Spanish Ham White Label report.

White Label Ham Comparison Across Supermarkets
To be more intuitive, I made a simple table for reference:
| Supermarket | Ham Type | Price Range (€) | Taste Characteristics | Personal Recommendation |
| Mercadona | Serrano Reserva | 1.8 - 2.5 | Moderate saltiness, stable fatty aroma | ★★★★☆ |
| Mercadona | Cebo Ibérico | 3.5 - 4.5 | Good fatiness, slightly short aftertaste | ★★★★☆ |
| Carrefour | Serrano Reserva | 1.7 - 2.4 | A bit dry, stronger saltiness | ★★★☆☆ |
| Carrefour | Cebo Ibérico | 4.0 - 5.0 | Occasionally disappointing Good quality, strong fatty flavor | ★★★★☆ |
| Lidl | Serrano Reserva | 1.6 - 2.2 | Leaner texture, milder flavor | ★★★☆☆ |
| Lidl | Cebo Ibérico | 3.8 - 4.8 | High cost-performance, especially the Deluxe series | ★★★★★ |
Detailed Commentary
Mercadona: The Mercadona ham is like a consistently average student—nothing spectacular but never failing. Their Serrano has balanced saltiness, great for eating directly, pairing with melon, or cooking. The Cebo Ibérico is quite fatty; you can distinctly taste the nutty aroma of Iberian black pigs. Although the aftertaste is not as strong as in premium brands, it’s definitely satisfying for everyday indulgence.
Carrefour: Carrefour offers a wider selection of white label, red label, and black label Spanish hams, sometimes you can find gems. Their Serrano batches vary widely; sometimes the ham tends to be saltier and drier. But their Cebo Ibérico, especially when discounted, offers excellent value! The meat quality and fat distribution look great, and it melts in your mouth. Highly recommended for those pursuing flavorful ham.
Lidl: Lidl is my choice for value! The regular Serrano is quite ordinary, but once it carries the “Deluxe” label, it’s a different story. Lidl’s Deluxe series Cebo Ibérico has almost no rivals at the same price point, with taste and aroma very close to some smaller brand hams—rich in oily fragrance and leaving a sweet aftertaste. The downside is… it’s rarely available.
If you want convenience and consistency, choose Mercadona; if you seek a better Iberian ham experience, give Carrefour and Lidl’s Cebo Ibérico a try. In my opinion, the best value crown goes to Lidl’s Deluxe series Iberian ham. Of course, taste is highly personal. What ham brands do you usually buy? Any hidden gems to recommend?
