Hello everyone, I have been in Spain for half a year now and still feel a bit like a tourist, especially when shopping in supermarkets. Everything else is manageable, but whenever I reach the refrigerated section and see that whole row of sliced ham, I face a serious case of choice paralysis. Prices range from just one or two euros to over ten euros per pack, and the packaging looks quite similar, so honestly, I don’t know what to pick! I believe many newcomers share my confusion, so I spent some time researching and want to share the results of my “market survey” here.
We need to understand that price differences mainly come from the “origin” of the ham. Simply put, the most common sliced hams available are divided into two types: one is the regular Jamón Serrano, made from white pigs, affordable and a staple in Spanish households. The other is the premium Jamón Ibérico, made from Spain’s unique black-hoofed pigs; depending on the purity of the black pig lineage and feeding methods, there are several grades, naturally impacting the price.

In mainstream supermarkets like Mercadona, Carrefour, or Dia, the most common packaging ranges from 100g to 150g per pack. Regular Jamón Serrano slices generally cost between €1.5 and €3.5, very affordable and great for sandwiches or as Tapas snacks. If you see packaging labeled “Reserva” or “Gran Reserva,” it means longer curing times, better flavor, and slightly higher prices.
Price Reference for Different Grades of Sliced Ham
To make it clearer, I compiled a simple table of Spanish ham local prices. The data Spanish ham bone prices come from averaging my visits to various supermarkets, so there may be some fluctuations; it’s for reference only!
| Ham Type | Common Packaging | Reference Price | Notes |
| Jamón Serrano | 100-200g | €1.5 - €3.5 | Everyday use, great value |
| Jamón de Cebo Ibérico | 80-100g | €4 - €7 | 50% or 75% Ibérico black pig, fed with feed |
| Jamón de Bellota Ibérico | 80-100g | €8 - €20+ | Acorn-fed Ibérico black pig, top flavor |
For daily consumption, Serrano ham is definitely the best value for money. Ibérico ham is delicious but quite expensive, better suited for special occasions or when you want to treat yourself. I used to think the more expensive the better, but later realized that finding a ham that fits your taste and budget is what really matters. What types of sliced ham do you usually buy? Do you have any favorite brands or bargain tips to share?
