I keep getting asked by friends back home and newcomers to Spain if Spanish ham is really cheap, and which one to buy. Today, as a local “resident” who frequents supermarkets regularly, I’ll talk about the real price range of this Spanish “national treasure” in local supermarkets, and how deep the market really is. I hope this helps everyone.
The Two Major Types of Ham: Serrano vs. Ibérico
First, you need to understand there are mainly two types of Spanish ham. Simply put: Jamón Serrano is made from regular white pigs, produced in large quantities and priced affordably, making it a daily staple for Spanish families. Jamón Ibérico, on the other hand, comes from prized Iberian black-hoof pigs and is divided into several grades based on the pig’s pedigree and feeding methods, so prices can be much higher.

For most people, the most common option is pre-sliced ham found in supermarkets, which is convenient! Prices are also straightforward. Based on my regular visits to Mercadona, Carrefour, and Dia supermarkets, here is a rough price range for your reference:
| Ham Type | Common Brands/Grades | Approximate Price per 100g |
| Jamón Serrano | Regular Grade | €1.5 - €3 |
| Jamón Serrano | Aged Grade | €3 - €5 |
| Jamón Ibérico de Cebo | Iberian Grain-fed | €5 - €9 |
| Jamón Ibérico de Bellota | Iberian Acorn-fed | €12 - €25+ |
Pricing for Whole Legs
During holidays or parties, buying a whole leg really boosts the atmosphere! Serrano whole legs are quite affordable, typically between €60 and €100 per leg. Sometimes supermarkets offer discounts, and you can get one for €30 to €50. However, Ibérico whole legs are much pricier — even the basic Cebo grade Spanish ham retail prices in Spain start at about €200. Top-tier Bellota legs have no upper limit and four to five hundred euros or more is common.
For beginners, buying a whole leg is not recommended since slicing takes skill and storing it can be tricky.
If you just want to try it or enjoy some ham with drinks, buying pre-sliced Serrano Reserva or Ibérico Cebo from supermarkets is enough and offers great value. If you want to gift or pursue the top-level flavor, go for Jamón Ibérico de Bellota 100% Raza Ibérica, and look for that black label! Hope this info helps everyone. What type do you usually buy?
