Hello everyone, recently I had a craving and couldn’t resist getting a piece of Iberian ham front leg. The first impression when I received it was: Why is it so small? It’s completely on a different scale compared to the hind legs I’ve seen in supermarkets before. So I wanted to start a thread to chat about what the standard weight for the front leg actually is.
After some research, I found out that the front leg and hind leg are completely different parts. The front leg is the pig’s forelimb, while the hind leg is the pig’s hind limb. The hind leg is obviously thicker, has more meat, and less bone proportionally, so overall size and weight are much greater. The front leg has a higher bone-to-meat ratio, and less pure meat, but many connoisseurs say the meat near the bone in the front leg has a more intense and direct flavor. Therefore, the Spanish ham front leg weights we buy typically weigh only just over half of the hind leg’s weight, which is completely normal.
The one I bought weighs 4.5 kilograms, which is a common size. Here’s a photo to show you how compact it looks:

Generally, the front legs with bone you find on the market usually weigh between 4kg and 6kg. If it’s below 4kg, it might be because the pig was too small or the curing time was not sufficient; front legs over 6kg are rare and usually come from higher-grade pigs, with a correspondingly higher price.
Front Leg Weight Reference
To help everyone with purchasing, I compiled a rough weight range table mainly for Iberian ham front legs:
| Grade | Common Weight Range |
| Black Label | 4.5kg - 5.5kg |
| Red Label | 4.5kg - 6.0kg |
| Green Label | 4.0kg - 5.5kg |
| White Label | 4.0kg - 5.0kg |
This table isn’t 100% precise but generally quite accurate. As you can see, even the highest grade Black Label front leg isn’t particularly heavy. You can use this for reference when buying to have a better idea. Don’t get tricked into buying an overweight White Label.
Don’t compare the size of front legs with hind legs since they are inherently different products. A range from 4 to 6 kilograms is normal; what really matters is the grade, curing time, and your personal taste preferences. What weight front legs do you usually buy? Do you have any tips or experiences to share? Let’s discuss together!
