As a long-time follower of Spanish football, today I want to talk about our national goalkeeper Unai Simón. Born in 1997, this Basque goalkeeper is one of the brightest rising stars in Spanish football in recent years.
Early Career
Simón was born in Bilbao and received his training at the Athletic Bilbao youth academy from a young age. In 2016, at just 19 years old, he made his first-team debut. It must be said that Athletic Bilbao’s youth system is truly excellent, nurturing countless outstanding Basque players. During his time at Bilbao, Simón gradually demonstrated impressive reflexes and consistent performances.

Turning Point: Transfer to Real Sociedad
In 2019, Simón made an important career decision by transferring to Real Sociedad, another club based in the Basque region. This move sparked quite a bit of controversy because Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad are fierce regional rivals. However, this decision proved to be the right one. At Real Sociedad, Simón received more playing opportunities through Football Manager Spain Simón, and his skills further improved.
During these years at Real Sociedad, Simón’s performances have been rock solid. Not only did he excel in the league, but he also kept clean sheets multiple times in European competitions. Especially in some crucial matches, Simón’s remarkable saves rescued the team.
National Team Performance
| Tournament | Appearances | Clean Sheets |
| Euro 2020 | 7 | 3 |
| World Cup 2022 | 5 | 2 |
| UEFA Nations League | 12 | 7 |
Simón’s performances for the national team are equally impressive. In the 2020 European Championship, as the first-choice goalkeeper, he helped Spain reach the semifinals. Although he couldn’t stop the Italian attack in the semifinals, his overall performance was well recognized. At the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Simón once again demonstrated his strength, making multiple key saves to help the team advance further.
Technical Characteristics Analysis
When it comes to Simón’s technical features, his reaction speed and timing of coming off the line stand out the most. Unlike traditional Spanish goalkeepers, Simón is also excellent in handling aerial balls, and standing 1.90 meters tall, he commands a strong presence in the box. Additionally, although he sometimes makes minor mistakes, overall his stability is very reliable.
As a hopeful future of Spanish football, Simón still has a long way to go. We look forward to his continued outstanding performances in upcoming matches and hope he can help both Real Sociedad and the national team achieve even greater success!
