Spanish Football Vocabulary Collection
As a football fan who has lived in Spain for many years, I’ve noticed that many friends often get confused by various professional terms when watching La Liga matches or Spanish football programs. Today, I’ve compiled a fairly comprehensive Spanish football vocabulary list to help everyone.
Basic Football Terms
The most basic vocabulary should be clear: fútbol means football (soccer), balón or pelota means ball, portería refers to the goal. Árbitro is the referee, and silbato is the whistle. Match-related words include: partido for match, liga for league, temporada for season, jornada for round.
Scoring-related vocabulary is especially important: gol means goal, marcar is the action to score, anotar also means to score. Empate is a draw, victoria is victory, and derrota is defeat.
Player Positions and Roles
The Spanish expressions for player positions are very distinctive. Goalkeeper is called portero or guardameta, defender is defensa, midfielder is centrocampista or mediocampista, and striker is delantero.

Passing-related terms: pase means pass, pase largo is long pass, pase corto is short pass, centro is cross, asistencia is assist. Regate means dribble, and dribbling also refers to ball control and dribbling.
Falta means foul, tarjeta amarilla is yellow card, tarjeta roja is red card. Fuera de juego is offside, a phrase very commonly used. Saque de esquina is corner kick, tiro libre is free kick, penalti is penalty kick.
