Just returned from Bilbao and want to share the exciting experiences from this largest city in the Basque region. As someone who has lived in Spain for many years, I truly believe Bilbao is a seriously underestimated travel destination.
Guggenheim Museum: Perfect Fusion of Architecture and Art
Without a doubt, the Guggenheim Museum is Bilbao’s iconic landmark. Frank Gehry’s titanium-clad architectural masterpiece is a work of art in itself. I recommend allocating at least 3-4 hours for your visit - not only to see the exhibitions but also to admire the building’s exterior from different angles. Tickets cost around 16 euros, with discounts available for students and seniors.

Savor Authentic Basque Cuisine
Bilbao’s food culture is absolutely unmissable. Pintxos are the local specialty, with each tavern having its own signature dishes. I personally recommend visiting traditional taverns in Casco Viejo, where you can enjoy wine while trying various pintxos. Remember, locals traditionally eat and drink while standing and chatting - this is the most authentic experience.
| Recommended Taverns | Specialty Pintxos | Price Range |
| Bar Gure Toki | Cod Croquettes | 2-4 euros |
| Café Bar Bilbao | Iberian Ham | 3-6 euros |
| La Viña del Ensanche | Cheesecake | 2-3 euros |
Stroll Through the Historic Old Quarter
Casco Viejo, known as “Siete Calles,” is the historic heart of Bilbao. The cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and traditional buildings are remarkably well-preserved. Santiago Cathedral is worth visiting, while Plaza Nueva is a popular gathering spot for locals. On Sunday mornings, there’s a flea market where you can find interesting antiques and handicrafts.
Ride the Funicular Mountain Railway
For panoramic views of Bilbao, you must take the Funicular de Artxanda cable car up the mountain. Though it’s only a few minutes’ ride, the views from the top are absolutely worthwhile. Especially at dusk, you can see the entire city bathed in sunset light. The cable car ticket is very affordable, around just over 1 euro.
Experience the Local Nightlife
Bilbao’s nightlife is incredibly vibrant, ranging from traditional taverns to modern bars. Locals typically don’t come out until after 9 PM, so don’t go too early when experiencing Bilbao travel. The Licenciado Poza district has many excellent bars, while for a more modern experience, head to the Abandoibarra area. Remember, nightlife here can continue until 2-3 AM.
