As a senior student who has studied in Spain for three years, I want to share some experiences about internal university scholarships today. Many students might not be fully aware of Spanish study abroad scholarships and the numerous funding opportunities available within universities, often missing important application deadlines for Spanish university scholarship applications.
Scholarship Type Analysis
Spanish university internal scholarships are mainly categorized into several types: academic excellence scholarships, financial hardship assistance, research assistantships, and special talent awards. Each university has different arrangements, but the basic framework is similar.

Academic Excellence Scholarships typically require an average grade of 8 points or above from the previous academic year, with some top programs including MAEC-AECID scholarships requiring even 8.5 points. These scholarships have the most intense competition, but also offer relatively high amounts, generally ranging from 800-1500 euros.
Application Timeline and Process
Most university scholarship applications are concentrated between March and May each year, during the second semester. Missing this time window basically means waiting until the next year. The application process usually includes filling out online forms, submitting transcripts, family income certificates, and other materials.
| Scholarship Type | Application Period | Required Materials | Selection Criteria |
| Academic Excellence | March-April | Transcripts + Application Form | Academic Performance |
| Financial Hardship | April-May | Income Certificate + Application Form | Family Income |
| Research Assistantship | Year-round | Research Plan + Recommendation Letters | Research Ability |
Practical Application Tips
From my experience, preparing materials in advance is extremely important. Especially for family income certificates, some documents need to be mailed from your home country, which takes considerable time. I recommend starting to prepare relevant documents in February each year.
Don’t apply for just one type of scholarship. I simultaneously applied for both academic excellence scholarships and research assistantships. Although I didn’t get the academic one, I successfully obtained the research assistantship, receiving 300 euros monthly.
Important Notes and Recommendations
It’s particularly important to note that most scholarships have residency requirements. If you move or return to your home country during the application period, make sure to update your address information promptly, as this could affect the selection results.
Finally, while internal university scholarships may not offer amounts as high as government scholarships, competition is relatively less intense and application procedures are simpler. I recommend that every eligible student give it a try - not applying means 0% chance, but applying at least offers hope.
