Just returned from Tenerife and wanted to share my transportation experience between the various towns on this beautiful island. As the largest island in the Canary Islands, Tenerife has a fairly comprehensive transportation system, though each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Public Bus System - The Most Economical Choice
Tenerife’s bus network covers almost all towns and attractions on the island. The main operator is TITSA, whose green buses can be seen everywhere on the island. Buses from Santa Cruz to La Laguna run very frequently, approximately every 15-20 minutes. Single journey tickets typically cost between 1.5-3 euros, and if you plan multiple trips, I recommend purchasing a ten-trip card to save considerable money. Note that buses travel slowly in mountainous areas - journeys from southern beaches to towns near Teide Peak can take over 2 hours.

Light Rail System Connecting Major Towns
Tenerife has a modern light rail line connecting the two main cities of Santa Cruz and La Laguna. This route passes through several important residential areas and shopping centers, making it very convenient for commuting between these two cities. The light rail operates from 6 AM to 11 PM, extending to midnight on weekends. Tickets are slightly more expensive than buses, but it’s faster and more comfortable.
| Transportation | Average Price | Coverage | Convenience |
| Public Bus | 1.5-3€ | Island-wide | Medium |
| Light Rail | 1.35-2.7€ | Santa Cruz-La Laguna | High |
| Car Rental | 25-40€/day | Island-wide | Highest |
| Taxi | Starting fare 3.15€ | Island-wide | High but expensive |
Car Rental - Highest Freedom of Exploration
If you want maximum freedom, especially when planning to visit remote beaches or mountain towns, car rental is definitely the best choice. The island has many international and local car rental companies with competitive pricing. I recommend booking online in advance, as you can usually get better prices. Tenerife’s road conditions are generally good, but mountain roads are quite winding, requiring extra caution while driving. Gas stations are well-distributed, so fuel availability isn’t a concern.
Taxi and Private Car Services
Taxis can be found in major towns, with taxi stands typically available at airports and hotel entrances. Prices are relatively high, but they’re convenient for short trips or when carrying lots of luggage. There are now apps for calling cars, and Uber-like services also operate on the island. Taxi fares from the airport to southern beach resort areas cost approximately 45-60 euros.
One final reminder: regardless of which transportation method you choose, always check timetables, especially on Sundays and holidays when many services are reduced or suspended. I recommend downloading TITSA’s official app for real-time bus arrival information - it’s very useful. Hope this information helps friends planning to visit Tenerife!
