Recently took my 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son to several charming towns around Málaga, and it was absolutely wonderful! As a mom who’s been living in Spain for 6 years, I’d love to share some particularly kid-friendly destinations.
Ronda: A Fairytale Town on the Cliffs
Ronda is definitely my top recommendation! It’s about a 1.5-hour drive from Málaga. The kids were absolutely fascinated by the famous New Bridge - standing on the viewing platform looking down into the gorge left them completely amazed. I highly recommend visiting the viewpoint near Puente Nuevo for photos - the scenery is truly breathtaking.
The town has many narrow streets perfect for strollers, plus numerous craft shops where children can pick out souvenirs. For lunch, I recommend finding a restaurant near Plaza del Socorro - they serve excellent paella there.

Mijas: The Charm of a White Mountain Village
Mijas is just 45 minutes from Málaga and represents a typical white town. The biggest highlight here for towns around Málaga is the donkey rides! The children were thrilled with their first donkey riding experience. Remember to book in advance as it’s very popular.
The town’s elevated position offers stunning views of the entire Mediterranean coastline. We spent ages at Mirador del Compás, with the kids enjoying ice cream while taking in the beautiful scenery. There’s also a small bullring in town - while you can’t watch bullfighting shows, you can tour it to learn about the history and culture of Málaga beaches.
Nerja: Perfect Combination of Beaches and Caves
Nerja is about an hour’s drive from Málaga, most famous for the Cueva de Nerja. This underground cave system is like an adventure for children! The cave maintains a constant temperature of around 19°C year-round, making summer visits particularly comfortable.
| Attraction | Opening Hours | Ticket Price | Suitable Age |
| Nerja Caves | 9:00-19:00 | Adults €10, Children €6 | 3+ years |
| Balcón de Europa | Open 24/7 | Free | All ages |
| Burriana Beach | Open 24/7 | Free | All ages |
After exploring the caves, visit the famous Balcón de Europa viewpoint, then head to nearby Burriana Beach for some sand play. The beach facilities are excellent, with showers and changing rooms, though it can get quite crowded in summer.
Practical Tips
Proper preparation is essential when traveling with children. I recommend allocating half a day to a full day for each town - don’t rush the itinerary. Keep plenty of water and snacks in the car, as mountain roads might cause motion sickness in little ones.
For accommodation, if you want to explore multiple places for Málaga accommodation, I recommend staying in Málaga city center for convenient transportation. However, if time permits, spending a night in Ronda is also a great choice to experience authentic Andalusian rural life.
Each of these towns has its unique character: Ronda suits families interested in history and culture, Mijas is perfect for those wanting beautiful photos, and Nerja combines natural landscapes with beach relaxation. Hope you and your children also have a wonderful Málaga adventure!
